Dr. Lake obtained his PhD at the University of Western Ontario in 2000, under the supervision of Dr. R. Kerry Rowe. His area of research is geo-environmental engineering with a focus on containment barrier evaluations and design. Prior to Dalhousie, he was employed with Jacques Whitford and Associates in their head office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Research
Canadian Geotechnical Society Colloquium Recipient - 2011. This
colloquium award is acknowledgement of achievements of young (under 40) members of the society. Awarded annually since 1977, Dr. Lake is the first ever recipient from Atlantic Canada.
“Evaluation of an HDPE geomembrane after 14 years as a leachate lagoon liner” co-authored by R.K. Rowe and H.P. Sangam published in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal was awarded two awards:
Honorable Mention for the 2004 R.M. Quigley Award for best paper in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal
Honorable Mention for the 2004 Thomas C. Keefer Medal for best paper related to environmental/transportation/water resources, etc.
Paper “Diffusion of Sodium and Chloride Through Geosynthetic Clay Liners” co-authored with R.K. Rowe chosen as one of the three best articles published in Geotextiles and Geomembranes during 2000.
